The Wrangler model is manufactured by American automobile producer and subsidiary of Chrysler, Jeep. It is a sub compact sport utility vehicle offered in front wheel drive. It is a successor model to Willys. It was first introduced in 1987 and underwent many changes in various generations.
The Wrangler models during the period 1987 to 1992 were built in Ontario,Canada and from later in Ohio. It was also called as YJ during 1987 to 1995, TJ during 1997 to 2006 and as LJ from 2007.
First Generation (1987 – 1996)
The four wheel drive versatility, maneuverability and optional antilock brakes are the main features that mark the initial Wrangler model, while the engine noise, low fuel economy rates and acceleration are considered as potential drawbacks.
The first generation Wrangler model was offered in three trim versions, base model SE, sport and Sahara. The only engine available to the model include a 4.0 liter 4-cylinder version that comes mated to 5-speed manual transmission. It also offers 3-speed automatic transmission as optional. Antilock brakes are offered as optional, while the command trac four-wheel drive is offered as standard. The sub compact SUV model was redesigned in 1997, gaining new features and revised exterior styling.
Second Generation (2007-Present)
The off road performance with the four wheel drive and maneuverability are the main features that attract potential customers towards the SUV model. Despite its good performance there are also certain negative points in the model, like rear seat comfort, entry/exit and engine noise.
The current generation Wrangler model comes with slight changes as it was redesigned totally in 2007. It is offered in both two-door and four-door forms. The available trim versions include base model X, Sahara and Rubicon. All the models come with removable hardtop or folding soft top.
The only engine available to the Jeep Wrangler include a 3.8 liter V6 version that delivers 202 hp of power at 6000 rpm and torque of 180 lb ft at 4500 rpm. The available transmissions include 5-speed automatic or manual. All the two-door models are offered in four-wheel drive, while the other models are offered in rear wheel drive. The two-door models can tow up to 2000 lbs, while the other models can tow up to 3500 lbs.
The available safety features in the Jeep Wrangler model include traction control, curtain side air bags, front side air bags, electronic stability program, driver and front passenger adjustable seat, rear view camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and antilock braking system. Major competitors to the model include GMC Terrain, Volkswagen Tiguan and Subaru Forester.
